Chock Full of Beans

I was so mesmerised by a photo of a 3D Latte art that a friend sent to us, that I immediately made a reservation for me and Boyfriend to...... Choke Full of Beans

I came across several places that offer 3D latte art, but have never been to one before. I am not a coffee person, but I'm definitely game for trying new stuff. ;)

I have read a few reviews online, and mostly mentioned their service was not too good, the latte art is good but coffee is bad, or sometimes latte art is not available at all, and were not mentioned earlier (seriously how to mention earlier. Yes, people are well-known for their 3D latte art, but that doesn't mean they are not selling any other things! *demanding people*). My friend had also pointed out that their sandwiches would taste better than other food in the menu.

Choke Full of Beans had spent great efforts in providing a good customer service experience, at least before you step into the cafe itself. They had an online reservation that is supported by SMS to confirm your reservation is made.

Though I felt that the SMS support is a little lame (why can't we process the full reservation online?) but still worth a praise for their effort to provide an online reservation service, especially for such a small cafe. Better than people complaining can't get through phone, etc.

Their system would also trigger an automatic call (operator system) to your mobile phone an hour prior to your reservation time, to confirm your reservation.

The place is rather small, and there are limited tables and seats. That probably explain why reservations and confirmations are needed so they can manage the customers flow.

I really have got this habit, no matter how good or bad review people gives, I sure want to take a personal look at it myself. I feel that experience can never be fully taken from other's advice, but experiencing it yourself worth more. Since I know some people doesn't get to have the 3D latte art, I better play safe and asked if the 3D latte art is available and for what kind of drinks. Their menu had clearly stated, that only Iced Coffees will have 3D latte art, while the others have 2Ds. They also serve other drinks including beer/cider and wine.

The coffee came pretty fast!

Iced Hazelnut Latte - S$6.50
Iced Caramel Macchiato - S$6.50

We did not make any request for any specific character to be done. But I guess the barista would have chosen a more masculine character than this, if he/she knew a guy is drinking it? Haha! Could you guess what are these two characters? If you could guess it, they are pretty well done huh!

Well, the coffee tasted... not very good. Not very aromatic and tasted quite bitter (even if mine was caramel). I cannot finished the cup. :x

We also ordered some food.

Smoked Salmon Sandwich - S$13

The portion was quite big, the toast was quite nicely done, and the amount of salmon is really generous. The salmon sliced were thick but not too thick to overpower the taste. Very unlike those thinly sliced tiny bits of salmon place only in the center like you have seen elsewhere. Accompanied with tomatoes, onions, capers, pepper and cream cheese, the ingredients really blend well together and creates an exciting and flavourful taste.

Big salmon slices.

Pork Roulade Pizza - S$13.50

Compared to the Smoked Salmon Sandwich, this taste less exciting. The cheese and sauce does blends well together though. This is not the crispy thin crust pizza, but the crust is still relatively thin as compared to the traditional Pizza. It will not make you feel like you have eaten too much bread even i you finished half of it.

They do have a small selection of cakes. 3 types daily and additional 2 more for weekends only.

(Daily)
New York Cheese Cake
Oreo Cheese Cake
Dark Chocolate Cake

(Weekends only)
Strawberry Shortcake
Carrot Cake

To be honest, I am not very impressed with the cakes being pre-packed, like those you find in the neighbourhood confectionery shops.

We decided to give their Oreo Cheese Cake a try! S$6.50.

The cake did not look very good when it came. But the chocolate syrup art did save a few scores! *Scardey Mario* Haha!!

This cake is a killer. Not killed because it taste good, but it make us felt super filling. The cheese taste very thick. Good if you love strong cheesy taste. The oreo bits are a little overwhelmed by the cheese, so you can't really taste it.

Overall, the service was acceptable. As the place is quite small, the staff had to clear the plates quite quickly, but they were still responsive to us. I personally feel the Smoked Salmon Sandwich is quite worth a return, however one would really think twice coming back, as the location is quite out of the (my) way, just for a sandwich.
